Remembering Truth to Combat Fear: 4 Tips for Overcoming Fear During a Time of Crisis
I keep reading the news headlines and fearing what I hear. But when the fear comes over me, I try to remind myself not to fear because Jesus has told us He is in control. I read this in a devotional this morning, and it reiterates this fact:

"It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." (Matthew 14:26-27, ESV)

We can remember a few truths to help us overcome our fear:

1. We cannot fear what we cannot control. We must remind ourselves constantly that we cannot fear what we cannot control. We cannot control coronavirus. We can control how we respond. We can control supporting others who are fearful, too….even if it is at a social distance.

2. We have helpful resources at our disposal. Sometimes, when I really get down and scared, I’ll go to the Northview Church website and listen to one of the older messages. Yes, I’ve heard them before, but each time I listen, I hear something new. I have an internet-based TV (Roku TV) and have installed the Northview app on it. Not only can I listen to the past messages, but I can watch them while sitting on my fluffy couch with my cat curled up next to me. This gives me comfort. It may warm your heart, too.

3. We are not alone. Despite the social distancing, work from home, cancelled activities and closed restaurants, the Holy Spirit is with us the entire way! “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, NIV)

4. We can always talk to God. Just close your eyes. Blank out the thoughts and absorb the fact that the Creator of the Universe is with us at all times. Just tell Him your fears and anxieties. It will get them off your chest and into the hands of the One who can take it all away from you!

Reach out to your faith and let the Lord guide you out of fear and anxiety. He is our rock and our salvation during times of fear and crisis.
